Day 13 of 25: Resist Temptation

CupcakeToday’s tip is a short but practical one.

If you know you are going to have difficulty controlling your portions or staying away from the dessert buffet, try one of these three strategies:

Bring a Food Chaperone:
As strange as it might sound, inviting a friend or family member to attend events with you who has enough willpower for you both might be the best way to make it through a holiday event – especially if you know that specific seasonal temptations will be there (e.g., Grandma’s walnut stuffing, Emily’s famous tiramisu, et cetera). Talk to your “chaperone” in advance about what your food goals for the evening are, and highlight any trouble spots on the menu — or anyone you might need help talking your way around, such as Marg from down the street and her delicious sugar cookies.

Text a Food Sponsor:
Have someone on stand-by via smartphone ready to talk you down from diving face first into the pecan pie or going back for seconds of turkey with all the fixings. If you feel your resolve slipping, quietly excuse yourself for a moment, and then go to the bathroom or nip outside to text your “sponsor.” TextingMoving locations will also help to break the spell that tiered plate of gorgeous little cupcakes was beginning to cast over you. Have your sponsor remind you why you should be hitting up a nice plate of fresh fruit instead of the red velvets or a chunk of candy cane bark.

Focus on Your Vision Board:
As Vision Boards (a collage of pictures which embody the goals and aspirations you are actively working towards) are growing in popularity, more and more people are using them as a motivational tool. If you have created a vision board of your own, it might help to have a portable image of it on-hand during the holiday season. If you feel temptation setting in during a Christmas party or similar event, simply pull out your smartphone and have a look at your board. Instantly, you will be reminded of your commitment to a healthier holiday and a healthier you!

  1. You would have been proud of me yesterday ! We went to Santa brunch, where they had gluten free food and I filled up on salad (no dressing), and the gluten free offerings. I had 1 plate, and left a little on because I felt full. I then drank a cold glass of water and I was content. After that, we took the boys tobogganing. It was a great day! You see, I use FitnessPal, so I know if I’m blowing my calories.
I’ve loss 2 inches in a week from cutting gluten – woot woot!

    1. WOW! I am super proud of you Rach! *high five* That’s such awesome news!
(Isn’t it funny how we really, truly can feel full on nutritious, clean foods?)
Well done, lady! Well done! 🙂
